Audi TTRS 8S 509ps stage 1 & 2

2017 AUDI TTRS 8S 2.5l Turbo

As always GT-innovation is trying to be ahead of the competition by having ready every tuning stage for all the new models on the market. In 2014 we were one of the first companies that developed 3 stages for the golf 7R Mqb platform and continued with big turbo applications.

As of today we have started the software development for then new  2017 Audi TTRS 2.5l S-Tronic in our all-wheel drive Mustang dynamo-meter. The stock numbers are much higher than expected as the peak torque is almost 60nm more and the curve is flat until the rev-limiter. The new version of the Bosch MED17 1.62 is in charge as it was on the 2016 RS3 8v (Med17.1.1) but there are a number of changes in the hardware and software of the engine management system.

The 2.5-liter 5 cylinder turbo engine makes 400 hp and drives all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic(S-tronic) Gearbox. The engine is limited to 480nm and the new engine block is designed and made completely from aluminum. We estimate a 0-60 time of 3.6 seconds from the numbers we have seen in our v-box.

Our first dyno-tests and data logs are showing significant power increase from the previous versions and those results are surpassing even the stock (advertised power) figures. Although the car in our dyno had only 800km on the dashboard the engine seemed to work perfectly and the break-in period did not seem to affect any of the performance.

As we have already report the power is more than expected +68nm +4ps and the afr is in a very very safe level which we have never seen that before in a med17 system. For now we will keep the afr levels unpublished until we finish up the development of our various tuning stages.

Stock Dyno run:

The owner of the development vehicle insisted on going to stage 2 after our first tests so what is better then making an already fast car, two times faster.Just after the release of the flashing protocol and diagnostic protocol for data logging we started to test our various modifications in a totally stock car.

Without touching the software on the dsg Gearbox we went straight on the high boost settings that can be  characterized as a stage 1+ software and here is what we got.

The power output of this monster is 509PS and 674NM without any hardware modifications. As we have seen and stated from the start the stock exhaust and catalyst of this particular vehicle is more than enough to cover lots and lots of power demands from the engine and the torque comes immediately from 2900rpm and until 4000 we have 674nm from the miraculous 2.5l 5 Cylinder engine.

The boost levels in our stage 1+ is 1.7 bars of overboost 1.6 bars constant up to 1.55 on the revlimiter in every gear.As we do not like to stay only in dyno runs, we have already made various datalogs and test runs on this vehicle on the street and we measured the common 100-200 and 0-100 times.

All our tests runs and our development has been done on 520 meters (986mbar) of altitude and this plays a significant role on the acceleration measurements as the car will run faster in a sea level area with 1013 mbar of pressure.

Key points to our software :

  • Catalyst Deactivation (possible)
  • Torque limiters raised to support up to 760nm
  • Timing and fueling fine tuning with the new boost settings.
  • Rpm limiter raised to + 200rpm (On Dsg equipped cars this is the maximum without modifying the software from the gearbox)
  • Sound Tuning (More gargles (aka schubabschaltung) on deceleration)
  • Boost on Launch control could be adjusted up to 1.5 bars
  • Complete exhaust flap opening at Individual and sport mode when selected by the sound mode button
  • Exhaust gas temperature protection adjustment on homogeneous mode.We decrease the values to keep the exhaust gas temperatures lower for more protection.
  • Boost levels up to 2.1 bars on Stage2 and stage 2+
  • Throttle can open more then 85% on stage 2 and stage 2+ software versions.
  • Vmax (maximum speed velocity) set to 317kmh.This speed can be reached with stage 1 2 and stage 2+ modifications.
  • Launch Control rpm set to  desired rpm value on manual cars.On dsg gearbox has to be re-programmed.
  • Boost on launch control can be adjusted with a 2 step like function that is duration based.

In most cases the acceleration numbers were between 7.5 sec and 7.8 sec for the 100-200 instead of 8.89sec with the stock software, and for the 0-100 we got 3.3 sec with the use of launch control instead of 3.6  sec as stock. The measurements were done with new Race logic Performance box Sport.

Here we go… Stock and tuned acceleration measurements.

Stock 100-200 Measurement.

Tuned 100-200 measurements with proof of signal continuation from the GPS receiver.

The 100 – 200 Timing was done with one driver, half tank and 102 octane fuel.

Now the 0-100 acceleration screenshot.

The 100-200 measurement here was not completed correctly as we only needed to check the 0 – 100 acceleration times and about the quarter mile we have various measurements from 11.1 to 11.6 which are traction dependent.

TTRS in Action with our stage 1+ software

317kmh on Autobahn

After a drag race in a local Event (Race at Airport Landhsut) we made some new records and tests with this extraordinary car but first of all we would like to show you our stage 2 100-200 timing using 1.87bars of boost (stage 2 ) software in a totally stock car using only a free flow air filter.

Between 7.1 and 7.3 or 7.4 is what our stage 3 software can do again in a totally stock car.Now take a look of our drag race achievements with the stage 2 software.

This is the first timed Audi TTRS 8S That does 11.1 in an official dragrace worldwide. Our timing was always between 11.1 and 11.3 with 30 degrees of temperature in a 520meter altitude.Enjoy.

Since we never stop improving our software and our times in 2018 we did manage to surpass last years results and we have now a full stage 2 solution that will take your TTRS 8S to another level.

In the meantime we spotted some weaknesses on the engine and one of them was the ignition system which is limited when the boost and ignition settings are very aggressive.(2.2 bar with 16 degrees of ignition in low external temperatures). The issue is  affecting the engine only when the stage 2 calibration is applied and only when the car is running in low atmospheric temperatures. Here is the solution :

The Okada plasma direct ignition system is one of the best choices in the market and fits perfectly our TTRS 8S in the oem position with the oem bolts.

The okada coil packs will exterminate any Misfire issues on high boost and high ignition settings or on big turbo applications and in the same time it will enable you to set better pre-charging (dwell) times from your calibration file.

Improving both the engine management calibration in all areas, the traction control system, the launch control algorithm and the gearbox management system our timing is now lower for the 100 200kmh benchmark and soon a new dyno measurement will be posted with our new improved stage 2+ settings. For now here are the times we did:

The measurements have been done with 2 passengers(75kg each) and half tank in the German autobahn. We have also improved our 0-100 timing and our over all quarter mile times.

News Flash: Intercooler upgrade plus new dyno measurement. Since we upgraded the coilpacks and now the intercooler for the summer we needed to make some new adjustments and dynographs to see what we have achieved so far and this is our results.

Stock intercooler and safety bar.

Total 44.444km, Daily driven with 318kmh + speed…

In October 2018 we decided to race our stage 2+ TTRS 8S in Nürburgring at Nordschleife. With now 55.000KM on the clock, daily driving and after taking part in 2 drag races plus 10 rounds in the Green hell last month, with performance levels that exceed 530hp – 760Nm and 100-200 at 6.7 seconds this is the best example of the software solution we have created for the all New aluminum 2.5 5 Cylinder engine that can be found in the TTRS 8S and the RS3 8V2 (face lift).

Here are some nice picks from our day in Green hell.

The upgrades will not stop until we reach the full potential of this engine. Since we are making datalogs in every step of the way we realized that the car has lost the overboost peak value of 2.1 bars (3087mbar) once we installed the bigger intercooler. The maximum value we got was 2910 mbar or 1.9 bars of boost and no matter the n75 duty cycle changes the over boost was still not as before.

So there is a restriction in the system and this was the cold air intake system(air induction). After careful consideration and tests on three different intake systems that existed in the market  and since our pipercorss air filter is no longer able to provide the airflow, we end up with the best solution which came from Integrated Engineering.

The piping has and does a very big difference. At the moment it is the only intake with a 4 inch pipe for the turbo.

There were no fitting issues although this intake system is designed for the rs3 mqb platform and the only re-location that needs to be done is the dq500 oil breather that is attached originally on the side of the intake airbox.

The quality overall is good and the finishing seems to be thick with no visible internal bends of the carbon fiber material. The performance gains are excellent since we found back our lost overboost values with peaks around 2.1 bar (3072mbar).

The car gained torque immediately with the intake providing enough airflow on low and high rpm areas without creating boost fluctuations from excessive air speed as we have seen on some other intake systems.

NEWS update on 27 MAy 2019.

Allthough most of those tests and improvements have been done in the past we just found some time to upgrade this thread so here we go.

After some small upgrades in our software on both ecu and tcu here are some more exciting news for our stock turbo TTRS 8S .We have now confirmed the time with 2 – 3 different devices and the consistency is great. Our new software runs a little bit less boost 1.9 bars to 1.7 bars ct on the stage 2 + with all the above upgrades but our timing on both 0-100 and 100-200 is far better than before.

Our 0-100 timing now comes at 3.06 which can be improved since we are testing the car on the street with street tyres on stock rims.

Our 100-200 timing has now dropped to 6.44 which is outstanding for a stock turbo on 100 octane fuel.

The Great news for this platform from our relentless development on the Med17.1.62 platform is the creation of our Mutlimap code which can swap almost any map needed for your custom setup.

Here is a small teaser of our development car running on our multimap code.Soon we will release TTe625 and TTE700 results on the same page.
